This and That

7aum arivu (7ஆம் அறிவு)

Have been looking forward to watch this movie for some time. But has been a  little skeptical since AR Murugadas said he wants to please A, B, C centers and their extended family with any of his movie irrespective of what he takes. Missed watching the movie the first week due to many schedule conflicts. By then reviews started coming in and my expectation hit rock bottom which was a blessing in disguise. Watched the movie finally this weekend, and it was not bad thanks to my low expectation.
Pros:

  • The cast. Shruthi, Suriya, Johnny tri Nguyen, all three looking good and acted well.
  • Bodhi dharma’s back story. Wish it was the entire movie. It would have been fresh and very entertaining. (Felt the same way in Dasavatharam as well. It is time for a good historic movie in Tamil. Anyone hearing me. If so, please remember it should be good.)
  • Didn’t screw up big time in an attempt to dumb down the movie for the audience
  • Visuals
  • Not dwelling much into Suriya/Shruthi romance
  • Strong role for the leading lady instead of typical “damsel in distress” heroine. Shruthi has played this part very well.
  • It was creative of AR Murugadoss to pick the story of Bodhidharma. At least I didn’t know about Bodhidharma until I saw this movie, although an article about Bodhidharma came in Junior vikatan in the 80s.

Cons:

  • Songs! Totally out of place and not impressive. “Ennum enna thozha” didn’t have the umph like “Jana gana mana” from Yuva. Probably the songs might work as a separate album, but not in this movie
  • Background score was not impressive, it was distracting in many places especially in the climax fight sequence
  • Too much reliance on Hypnotism and less martial arts
  • Unnecessary display of  Surya’s  body. Kind of starts reminding one of Salman Khan
  • Climax was dragging. Since we all know that Suriya is going to win, why drag it out.
  • Gets too preachy at times. I mean, if the directed has depicted Bodhidharma as a Telegu prince in 7th sense, what does it do the credibility of the director!! So why bring the tamil pride and get all preachy when you are ready to misrepresent historic details in order to make money

Overall, the movie can is worth watching one time.

  1. Agree with you in all respects! Great minds… :–D

I liked the strong lead woman, we need more such characters instead of the dumb ones who are universal in tam movies!

    • Yes.Great mind :-D. I like that! We see many such strong women in day to day to life. It is high time we see them in the movies too!

  2. I guess you have been following B Rangan and Hawkeye? 🙂

    Aside, this is what my friend feels;

“7th Sense – the parts they thought we’d sleep thru, we loved. The parts they thought the audience ‘expected’ from the hero – we slpet through, yawned through and almost regressed into our own grandfather’s DNA. The frst 20 minutes had great visuals and were engaging. The attention paid to stunts and the excellence displayed there could have also been paid to screenplay. And as for the whole chest thumping Thamizh thing (And pulling Malaysia and Sri Lanka for claps) was down right pandering. The circus scenes – lowe scenes of sruthi and surya – so many lame songs – one love song and then one love feelings song – all could have been taken out. Fnal fight was a throwback to the old MGR – they had brought back his DNA I suppose – all out fight resolution . And frankly, dont know what the hype was all about Dongi Pona Lee ;p. I know, I know, if only Muruadoss was born in a better place than here he would not have had t pander like this Im sure – I think he showed his intention and skill in the first 20 mintes and then Kollywod took over! My heart goes out to him!!!”

  3. Also, history tells us that Bodhidharman went to China when he was 150 and not 25 yr old body builder 😀 There is protest in Chennai apparently 😀

    • Your friend is right! I agree! As for Bodhidharman being 150 when he went to China, no comments! 🙂
And yes, read both BR and HawkEye’s blogs! 😉

  5. Agree! My sis and I saw the movie and liked the bodhidharma part too.. we were telling the same thing – wish they did some full length movie like first part of dasavatharam and this one. The thing that irked us was shruti hassan singing ‘ullam thulluma’ in yellae lama with chinna ‘la’.. and spb rocked yemma yemma..

    ‘oru dhaba paakalamnga’

  6. Praveen, what is this? 150 yr problem in the middle middle?! We are perfectly okay with the 25 year body builder Surya. Murgadoss did please me by changing the age of Bodhidharman.

Pro#2, haven’t watched the movie. But am sure will agree and suspect it has everything to do with us and the get up of the subject acting.

  7. Why is con#4 a con? Seriously? It has to be removed ASAP.

    Comment by utbtkids — November 11, 2011 @ 8:49 am

    • Well.. The display in climax is not very appealing since it is air brushed and I think it is an insult to his bod! 🙂 I should have been more clear! Sorry-nga aapicer!

  8. @UTBT: 🙂 I have no issue and these are not my views either. There was a protest in Madras and there are historical evidences that Bodhidharman went to China when he was 150.
